Fundada em 1816 a destilaria de Lagavulin (Laga-VOO-lin), situada numa pequena baía, guarda a costa oposta ao Castelo de Dunyveg (hoje em ruínas), da familia Macdonals, Lords of The Isles, um lugar segundo a tradição no qual o Rei Jaime IV (Escócia) bebeu pela primeira vez, em 1493, uma bebida espirituosa destilada. Foi deste local que 1000 homens, se fizeram ao mar para combater juntamente com Robert the Bruce na batalha de Bannockburn em 1314.
Utilizando a água do Lago Solan, este whisky possue um estilo seco, com muito corpo, turfa, influênciado pelo fumo e um paladar claramente medicinal como os seus vizinhos de Laphroaig, Ardbeg e Caol Ila.
